This: a wild bear strolls into a supermarket in Akita City, Japan, and attacks a worker. This isn't a scene from a movie, but a real event that happened on a Saturday. The employee, aged 47, was lucky to escape with just a minor head injury. But the bear wasn't done yet. It stayed in the store, causing quite a ruckus. The next two days saw it feasting on the meat section and damaging shelves before it was finally caught.
Why did this bear go wild? Experts think climate change might be playing a role. It's messing with the bears' food sources in the northern mountains. So, these hungry bears are heading to cities, looking for food. This is becoming a common problem, with more bear attacks reported in the area.
To catch the bear, authorities sent in a drone on Sunday. Meanwhile, police officers, armed with shields and protective gear, entered the store. The bear was found in the storage area, and workers set up a trap with honey and apples. It was caught on Monday.
Unfortunately, the bear was put down. Akita City Hall said that bear attacks in the prefecture were higher this year, following a record last year. Japan as a whole saw more injuries and property damage from bear attacks in the past fiscal year.
