A Yoga Tycoon's Tax Troubles: The Truth Comes Out
Sat Oct 05 2024
This – a yoga business mogul, Gregory Gumucio, 63, from Colorado, admitted to not paying over $2. 5 million in taxes! This happened during a plea hearing at a New York federal court. Gumucio's yoga studio chain, known as "Yoga to the People," brought in loads of money – around $20 million in revenue! But he didn’t share this wealth with Uncle Sam from 2012 to 2020.
Why did he do it? Well, Gumucio said he simply didn't file tax returns to avoid paying taxes. He even paid his yoga teachers in cash and didn’t provide them with any tax forms. This means the government had no way of knowing how much revenue was coming in from those yoga sessions!
Now, you might be thinking, "What's going to happen to him? " According to a deal he struck with prosecutors, Gumucio could face up to five years in prison. The judge, John P. Cronan, is set to decide his fate on January 16. Two other people involved in this case are still waiting for their trials to start.
It's not just about the taxes though – Gumucio has a colorful past. He was arrested 15 times before and even used different names and Social Security numbers. Despite all that, he managed to build an international yoga business with studios in various U. S. cities and even abroad in Spain and Israel.
As for the money he owes, Gumucio has agreed to pay back $2. 56 million plus interest. That’s a big chunk of change! But is it enough to make up for what he did? That’s something you might want to think about. After all, everyone pays taxes – even yoga teachers!
