A Young Hero's Journey: The Truth Behind the Spotlight

USA, HoustonThu Mar 13 2025
In the world of politics, moments of unity are rare. But when a 13-year-old cancer survivor, Devarjaye DJ Daniel, was honored as an honorary Secret Service agent, it seemed like a moment of bipartisan agreement. The young boy, who has been fighting brain and spine cancer, was introduced by President Trump during a Congressional address. His journey to this moment is inspiring. During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, DJ Daniel and his family found refuge in a city shelter. It was there that a trio of cops brought them pizza, sparking DJ Daniel's dream to join law enforcement. He was inspired by the story of Abigail Arias, a 7-year-old girl with cancer who became an honorary officer of Freeport, Texas, before passing away in 2019. DJ Daniel followed in her footsteps, completing his 909th swearing-in as an honorary officer. The moment was celebrated by Republicans, who gave DJ Daniel a standing ovation. However, Democrats remained seated, leading to a heated exchange on social media. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized the Democrats, stating that they were the party of "insanity and hate" for not clapping for a child. But the story doesn't end there. Behind the scenes, a different narrative was unfolding. The same president who honored DJ Daniel had made significant cuts to pediatric cancer research and treatment programs. The program, which cost nothing at all, was developing more than 60 drugs for kids with cancer and other fatal diseases. Nancy Goodman, who lost her 10-year-old son to brain cancer in 2009, has been a champion for pediatric cancer research. She founded Kids v Cancer, dedicating her life to creating incentives for companies to develop drugs for seriously ill kids. Goodman's work led to the passage of the Give Kids A Chance Act in 2011. However, the reauthorization of this act was pushed out with many health-care provisions as part of a Continuing Resolution meant to back the government from December 2024 to March 2025. Among the excised provisions were a bunch of pediatric cancer provisions, including the reauthorization of the Give Kids A Chance Act. Elon Musk, who was involved in the decision, noted that the resolution was 1547 pages and it landed with a mere 116 pages. Goodman criticized Trump for choosing the wrong path. "That said, if the president is going to help kids with cancer, granting DJ Daniel an honorary Secret Service agent position is not going to do it, " said Nancy. She suggested that Trump's administration should start by resuming and restoring the NIH grants he had paused without cutting the provisions for necessary government costs. "Half of all kids in the United States are on Medicaid. It’s going to really hurt seriously ill children if we cut Medicaid. " Goodman emphasized that the whole Congress should have cheered for DJ Daniel, but the moment was overshadowed by the reality of the situation. The young hero's journey is a reminder of the importance of pediatric cancer research and the need for bipartisan support.
