A Young Man's Struggle to Leave the Caribbean
Dominican Republic, HigüeyWed Mar 19 2025
A court in the Dominican Republic is set to decide whether a young American man will be allowed to return home. Joshua Riibe, a 22-year-old student from Minnesota, has been stuck in the country since early March. He was the last person seen with Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student who went missing during a spring break trip. Riibe claims he was with Konanki on the beach just before she vanished.
Riibe has been under tight restrictions. He says authorities have kept him confined to his hotel room, except when they accompany him. His passport and phone have been taken away. He has been eager to go home, but his movements are closely monitored. Riibe's lawyers have stated that he has been stuck at the resort where Konanki was staying before she disappeared.
The Dominican Republic National Police have not confirmed or denied these restrictions. However, prosecutors have stated that Riibe is not being detained at the hotel. Riibe mentioned that Konanki’s family visited him at the hotel. He described their meeting as positive, with Konanki’s mother thanking him for helping her daughter earlier.
Riibe's account of the events leading to Konanki's disappearance is intriguing. He told local authorities that he and Konanki were in the water, talking and kissing, when a wave swept them out to sea. Riibe said he tried to help Konanki breathe, but the struggle was intense. He managed to get her to shore, but she vanished shortly after. He was shocked to learn about her disappearance later.
Konanki’s parents have been grappling with the news. They believe their daughter drowned. They have requested that Dominican authorities declare her dead, hoping this will help them begin the grieving process. The parents mentioned that both U. S. and Dominican authorities showed them how high the ocean waves were at the time of Konanki's disappearance. They did not comment on Riibe's hearing or name him specifically, but said that authorities clarified that the person of interest is not a suspect from the beginning.
The circumstances surrounding Konanki's disappearance are puzzling. She was on spring break and staying at a five-star hotel in Punta Cana. Her friends left the beach to return to the hotel, but Konanki stayed behind with people she met on the trip. Police have said no signs of violence were found at the beach. Red flags, indicating strong currents and high waves, were flying when Konanki disappeared.
Dominican authorities have stated that no one is considered a suspect. They do not use the term "person of interest, " as the sheriff’s office in Loudoun County has described Riibe. The sheriff's office has sent officials to assist authorities in Punta Cana but has no jurisdiction over the investigation.
