A Young Warrior's Journey: Celebrating Life Amidst Rare Cancer
Memphis, USAWed Oct 01 2025
Aylin, a brave 15-year-old battling a rare liver cancer, recently celebrated her quinceañera, a significant Latin American tradition marking the transition to adulthood. Her journey has been anything but ordinary. At just 12 years old, Aylin was diagnosed with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FL-HCC), a rare form of liver cancer. This diagnosis was a massive shock, but Aylin faced it with remarkable courage.
Her treatment was intense. Aylin underwent a 12-hour liver transplant followed by months of recovery and six cycles of chemotherapy. The physical toll was immense, but her spirit remained unbroken. Despite losing her hair, Aylin's determination never wavered. Her mom, Nallely, often wondered if they would reach this milestone. "There were times when I was like, 'What if we don't get to 15? ' " she recalled.
In 2023, after her initial treatment ended, Aylin and her family hoped for a break. However, in December 2024, the cancer returned, spreading to her stomach, esophagus, intestines, and pancreas. This relapse hit hard. "When I got sick this time — I relapsed — that's when it sunk in deep, " Aylin admitted. Doctors considered surgery, but additional chemotherapy and radiation began to shrink the tumors, making surgery unnecessary.
Aylin's quinceañera was a beacon of hope. She wore an aqua gown that reflected her dream of becoming a marine biologist and a shark pin from her radiation oncologist. The celebration included a Mass at her Catholic church and a reception for 150 friends and family. Her aunt's food truck served birria, rice, beans, and flautas, adding a personal touch to the event.
The highlight of the day was dancing with her family. "I'm dancing with her and that was the moment she was like, 'Mom, I'm 15 — I made it to 15, '" Nallely tearfully recalled. Surrounded by loved ones, Aylin embraced the moment, honoring her journey and the tradition.
Aylin's story is a testament to resilience. Her courage and determination serve as an inspiration, reminding us all to cherish every moment and celebrate life's milestones, no matter the challenges.
