A Young Warrior's Journey: Celebrating Life Amidst Rare Cancer
Aylin's Journey: A Tale of Resilience and Hope
Aylin, a 15-year-old battling a rare liver cancer, celebrated her quinceañera, a significant Latin American tradition marking the transition to adulthood.
A Diagnosis at 12
At just 12 years old, Aylin was diagnosed with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FL-HCC), a rare form of liver cancer. This diagnosis was a massive shock, but Aylin faced it with remarkable courage.
Treatment and Recovery
Her treatment was intense. Aylin underwent a 12-hour liver transplant followed by months of recovery and six cycles of chemotherapy. The physical toll was immense, but her spirit remained unbroken.
"There were times when I was like, 'What if we don't get to 15?'" Nallely, Aylin's mom
Relapse and Resilience
In 2023, after her initial treatment ended, Aylin and her family hoped for a break. However, in December 2024, the cancer returned, spreading to her stomach, esophagus, intestines, and pancreas.
"When I got sick this time — I relapsed — that's when it sunk in deep." Aylin
Doctors considered surgery, but additional chemotherapy and radiation began to shrink the tumors, making surgery unnecessary.
The Quinceañera Celebration
Aylin's quinceañera was a beacon of hope. She wore an aqua gown that reflected her dream of becoming a marine biologist and a shark pin from her radiation oncologist.
The celebration included:
- A Mass at her Catholic church
- A reception for 150 friends and family
- Birria, rice, beans, and flautas served by her aunt's food truck
A Moment to Cherish
The highlight of the day was dancing with her family.
"I'm dancing with her and that was the moment she was like, 'Mom, I'm 15 — I made it to 15.'" Nallely, tearfully recalling
A Testament to Resilience
