Born and raised in Los Angeles, Barnes earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University and was pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Mississippi. Friend and poet Safia Elhillo wrote a heartfelt tribute on Substack, describing Barnes as a "brilliant writer" and a "bender of the genre.
