In Afghanistan, a severe hunger crisis is worsening, and it's hitting children the hardest. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has shared some concerning news. For the first time in many years, they can't provide enough aid to everyone who needs it. This is a big deal because winter is coming, and food is already scarce.
The situation has gotten worse since 2021. That's when international aid dropped significantly after the U. S. and its allies left Afghanistan. The Taliban took control, and things have been tough ever since. Natural disasters, like earthquakes, have made things even harder.
The WFP needs over $460 million to help the six million most vulnerable people in Afghanistan. Without this money, they can't provide enough food or nutrition support. Child malnutrition is at its highest level in decades. This means more children are likely to die, especially during the cold winter months.
Things are made worse by the number of Afghans returning from neighboring countries. Millions have been sent back from Iran and Pakistan. Afghanistan doesn't have the resources to support them all. This sudden influx of people is putting even more pressure on the already struggling food supply.
The WFP is only 12% funded right now. This is a big problem because it means they can't help as many people as they need to. Jean-Martin Bauer, the WFP Director of Food Security and Nutrition Analysis, shared some shocking numbers. He said that 3. 7 million Afghan children are acutely malnourished. Out of these, 1 million are in severe condition. In simple terms, this means children are dying.
The WFP estimates that 17 million people in Afghanistan are facing hunger. This is about 3 million more than last year. The situation is critical, and immediate action is needed to prevent more lives from being lost.
