African and Caribbean Leaders Push for Global Slavery Reparations
AfricaCaribbeanSat Jun 20 2026
A three-day gathering in Ghana wrapped up with a bold push for reparations tied to transatlantic slavery. African and Caribbean nations aren’t just asking for apologies—they’re demanding real action. This includes debt relief, financial compensation, and reforms to global financial institutions that have long sidelined poorer countries. The plan, endorsed by both the African Union and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), also calls for the return of stolen cultural artifacts and human remains, climate justice funding, and special attention to the suffering of enslaved women and girls.
The movement gained momentum after a U. N. resolution in March—backed by 123 countries—declared slavery "the gravest crime against humanity. " But major powers like the U. S. , EU member states, and Britain either opposed or abstained, arguing that such declarations risk creating a hierarchy of atrocities. Meanwhile, countries like France have taken small steps, such as repealing old slavery-era laws that once treated enslaved people as property—without yet committing to reparations.
Leaders at the conference emphasized responsibility over blame. Ghana’s president reminded attendees that history doesn’t demand guilt but accountability. French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged the brutal legacy of slavery but cautioned that reparations shouldn’t be seen as a quick fix to close the chapter. Over 12 million Africans were forcibly taken during slavery’s peak, and advocates argue that today’s racial and economic inequalities are direct consequences of that history.
The reparations plan also urges African nations to offer citizenship pathways for descendants of the diaspora and preserve historic forts as memorials. While the document doesn’t name specific countries for apologies, it’s clear which nations benefited most from slavery—and which ones are now demanding justice.
