AI Chatbots Could Help Cancer Gene Patients But Need Strict Rules

Germany / European UnionThu Oct 01 2026

People with BRCA gene changes face really hard medical choices while feeling scared and stressed. Genetic counseling often has long waits and gaps in support. During these gaps many patients turn to the internet where information can be wrong or confusing. This makes their decisions even harder.

A research team wanted to see if AI chatbots could help fill these gaps. They ran two workshops with eighteen experts from different fields. These experts included doctors, patients, tech people, and legal advisors. They used special exercises to map out what a responsible chatbot would need to look like.

The workshops showed three big conflicts. First chatbots could be available all the time but doctors worry about losing their role. Second chatbots could make things simple and comforting but medical facts must stay precise. Third chatbots could scale up easily but privacy laws and hospital rules are very strict especially in Germany and the EU.

To be safe the chatbot must have clear limits. It cannot give medical advice or replace doctors. A human professional must always oversee it. The system must fit into existing care pathways not sit outside them. It also must follow data protection laws and medical device rules from day one.

Building this kind of tool is possible but it cannot move fast and break things. It needs careful design constant human checks and legal compliance built in from the start. Otherwise it could do more harm than good for people already facing tough choices.
