You know how police sometimes have to figure out if someone's telling the truth or lying on a 911 call? A research team looked into this. They used a special computer method called machine learning to analyze calls about homicides or missing people. There were 210 calls, half were false reports and half were true reports. The researchers watched these calls very closely, checking for 86 things people do when they're lying or telling the truth.
They used a special model to check how good the computer was at telling the difference. Overall, the computer was about 68% right. When it came to homicides, it was a bit better, about 71%. But when it came to missing people, it was not as good, about 61%. Some easy signs of lying they found were when someone blames others, makes a big deal out of themselves, or acts uncertain.
