AI in Film: New Rules and Big Questions
Hong Kong, ChinaThu Mar 19 2026
The FilMart forum brought together five seasoned creators to talk about how artificial intelligence is changing the way movies are made.
The first speaker was a well‑known director who also runs a media school in Hong Kong. He announced a new master’s course that will teach students how to use AI tools while also learning the ethical rules that should guide them.
He said that teaching and industry must work hand in hand, so that the technology keeps up with professional standards.
Another panelist is a former Google engineer who now runs an AI studio in California. He explained how he moved from coding to producing films after seeing how quickly AI could create a short preview of a movie before it was finished.
His experience convinced him that the real challenge is to keep up with the speed of new tools and find ways for people who make movies to use them.
A director from Korea pointed out that using AI is not just a matter of adding new gadgets, but also changing the way people think about filmmaking.
He said that the old ways of working and the new AI ways do not fit together automatically, so people need to learn a common language.
Legal worries were also raised. A studio chief from South Korea said the country is working on laws that protect artists’ rights when AI creates new images.
He added that clear rules will help the industry grow safely.
All the speakers agreed that AI is already shaping global film production, not just a future idea.
One veteran director who started with 16‑mm film said that technology is unstoppable, and filmmakers should focus on how they can benefit from it rather than resist it.
The forum ended with a call for more training, cross‑disciplinary learning and ethical guidelines to keep AI helpful rather than harmful in movies.
