Airport in Bunia Reopens as Ebola Response Shifts
Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bunia,Tue Jun 02 2026
The Democratic Republic of Congo has decided to reopen the Bunia airport, a key transport hub in an area that has suffered heavily from the latest Ebola outbreak. This move comes after a period when flights were suspended, leaving many residents worried about getting essential supplies.
The government announced the suspension last month to curb the spread of the virus. While commercial flights stopped, humanitarian and medical airdrops continued with special approval. Now, the transport ministry says conditions allow for a careful return of air traffic.
Before boarding, passengers will have their temperatures checked and must wash hands. Anyone with a fever will be denied travel. These steps aim to keep both travelers and locals safe while the outbreak is still active.
Ebola was first confirmed in Ituri province on May 15, and the World Health Organization declared it an international emergency. The virus strain is called Bundibugyo, and this marks the country’s 17th Ebola outbreak. Health officials say the situation has improved but remains under control.
WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Bunia and noted five confirmed recoveries. He also urged increased testing, better treatment facilities, and stronger confidence in health workers. Current statistics show 321 confirmed cases and 48 deaths, with the disease now present in 15 of Ituri’s 36 health zones. Cases have also appeared in North and South Kivu, as well as neighboring Uganda.
The International Rescue Committee warns that the real number of infections could be higher, suggesting the virus may have been circulating for up to three months before official detection. This uncertainty underscores the importance of the airport’s reopening as part of a broader strategy to manage the outbreak.
