Airport Shutdown Risk as TSA Workers Face Pay Gaps
United StatesTue Mar 17 2026
The Department of Homeland Security’s budget dispute has left thousands of TSA agents without pay, creating a ripple effect that could bring smaller airports to a halt.
When the last full paycheck was delayed, security staff began taking leave in search of other jobs, pushing lines far beyond airport terminals.
Acting Deputy TSA Administrator Adam Stahl warned that if the funding issue persists, smaller airports might have to close entirely.
The current partial shutdown mainly cuts DHS funds, leaving 50, 000 TSA officers unpaid for a month.
On March 15, about ten percent of those workers did not report to duty, citing financial hardship.
One agent explained that a partial paycheck of $500 after expecting $2, 000 left him with a $3, 500 debt he could not resolve.
During the longest U. S. shutdown under President Trump, airlines cut schedules at major airports to ease pressure on FAA controllers who were also unpaid.
Although the FAA remains funded, travelers still face long waits because TSA staff work without compensation.
The TSA has not confirmed whether it will close small airports, and the Department of Transportation defers to Homeland Security.
The situation remains fluid; updates will follow as new information emerges.
