Airstrike on Tehran Prison Sparks Global Outcry
Tehran, IranMon Mar 16 2026
A United Nations investigator announced that an Israeli bombing of Tehran’s Evin prison last year amounted to a war crime. The strike killed over 70 people, according to Iranian officials, and the site has suffered further damage from recent U. S. -Israeli attacks. The prison is known for holding political detainees, including a British couple, raising fears that the inmates are in danger.
The report, presented to the U. N. Human Rights Council, was built on interviews with survivors, satellite images and other evidence. It states that Israel deliberately targeted a civilian facility, which is prohibited under international law. The investigator also highlighted the rising number of executions in Iran after last year’s strikes, warning that continued bombings could push the government to crack down harder on opposition.
Iran’s ambassador demanded worldwide condemnation of the U. S. -Israeli air campaign, citing more than 1, 300 deaths in Iran. Meanwhile, a U. N. -appointed rights specialist raised concerns about prisoners who were taken during mass protests in January. Families cannot reach their loved ones, and supplies of food and medicine are running low inside the prison.
Israel has withdrawn from the U. N. Human Rights Council, leaving its seat vacant. No official response was received from Israeli leaders or the military following the release of the report.
