AI's New Role: Commenting on Your Instagram Posts?

Fri Mar 21 2025
Meta, the company behind Instagram, has been busy exploring ways to use artificial intelligence to make interactions on the platform more engaging. This isn't the first time they've experimented with AI. In the past, they even tried creating AI-generated characters with unique profiles and personalities, but those were quickly scrapped because they were seen as creepy and unnecessary. Now, Meta is testing a new AI feature that might not go down well with users. They want to use AI to help users write comments on Instagram posts. A social media tester, Jonah Manzano, spotted this feature. It's called “Write with Meta AI. ” This feature allows users to get AI-generated suggestions for comments on their friends' posts. Here's how it works: If you have access to this test feature, you'll see a pencil icon next to the text bar under a post. Tap that, and Meta AI will analyze the photo and generate three comment suggestions. For instance, if the photo is of someone smiling with a thumbs up in their living room, Meta AI might suggest comments like “Nice living room setup, ” “Love the cozy vibe, ” or “Great spot for a photo. ” If you don't like the first three suggestions, you can refresh to get more. Meta has been testing AI in various ways, including generating comment summaries on Facebook last year. They've mentioned that they regularly test new features to make their apps more fun and useful. However, they haven't shared details about when or if this AI comment feature will be available to everyone. This new feature might not be well-received by users who prefer genuine comments from friends. Many people miss the days when Instagram was more authentic and there was less pressure to perform. The addition of AI comments could feel inauthentic and unnecessary to some. It's also unclear if Meta plans to roll out this feature widely or if it will remain a test. It's important to think about how AI is changing the way we interact on social media. While AI can make things more convenient, it can also make interactions feel less personal. As AI becomes more integrated into our daily lives, it's crucial to consider the impact it has on our experiences and relationships.
