AI's Role in Helping Kids with Long-Term Illnesses

GlobalSat Dec 14 2024
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its cousin, machine learning (ML), have been making waves in the medical world, especially when it comes to helping kids with long-term illnesses. This review takes a closer look at how AI is being used to monitor, guide, and assist young patients. Researchers sifted through five major databases (Medline, Scopus, PsycINFO, ACM, Web of Science) and also checked out gray literature, personal archives, and relevant paper references. They found 31 studies that fit their criteria. The studies used AI for tasks like figuring out diseases, predicting outcomes, and providing decision support. Most of these AI tools were put to the test using past data. Interestingly, AI showed promise in mental health too, such as using speech samples or social media data to predict therapy success for various chronic conditions.

questions

How effective are AI tools in real-time monitoring of chronic diseases in children and adolescents compared to traditional methods?
What are the potential ethical implications of using AI for decision support in pediatric chronic disease care?
If AI can predict therapy outcomes by analyzing social media data, can it also tell if a teenager will clean their room?
