Al Pacino has played many gangsters, but two stand out. Michael Corleone from The Godfather and Tony Montana from Scarface. Both stories show how power and greed can ruin lives.
Michael and Tony are very different. Michael is calm and smart. Tony is loud and reckless. But in the end, both lose everything they love.
Tony dies in a big, violent way. He fights many enemies in his home. But before he dies, he realizes he has lost everyone. His sister, his best friend, his wife, and his allies are all gone. His last moments are sad and lonely.
Michael dies quietly. He is alone in a garden. His daughter, brothers, wife, and son are gone. He has wealth but no one to share it with. His death is peaceful but also very sad.
Both endings show the same lesson. Power and greed can make you lose the people you care about. This is a common theme in gangster movies.
Not all of Pacino's gangster roles end this way. In Donnie Brasco, Lefty Ruggiero dies differently. He says goodbye to his wife and prepares for his fate. He is still loyal to his friends. This earns him a more dignified end.
