Derrick Dearman, 36, was executed in Alabama on Thursday. He had asked to go forward with his lethal injection after admitting to killing five people in a 2016 drug-fueled attack. Dearman broke into a home where his estranged girlfriend was staying, then killed her and four others with an ax and a gun found in the house. He was sentenced to death, but his execution was delayed due to appeals. Dearman finally dropped his appeals, stating that it wasn't fair to the victims or their families to prolong justice. On the day of his execution, he apologized to the victims' families before losing consciousness. Alabama also has another execution scheduled, but it was delayed due to legal issues. The victims include Shannon Randall, Joseph Turner, Robert Brown, Justin Reed, and Chelsea Reed, who was pregnant. Families of the victims are still dealing with the loss.
