Alabama vs. Auburn: The Basketball Rivalry
Sat Feb 15 2025
The stage is set for a monumental showdown in college basketball. Top-ranked Auburn and second-ranked Alabama are gearing up for a clash that will determine the SEC's top spot, the AP Poll's No. 1 ranking, and the top seed in bracketology. This isn't just any game; it's a culmination of years of investment and dedication from both universities.
The state of Alabama has poured resources into college basketball, taking significant risks that have paid off big time. Fans from both sides are eagerly anticipating this regular-season game, where everything is on the line.
The rivalry between Alabama and Auburn is intense, often compared to the Iron Bowl in football. The basketball version of this rivalry has evolved over time, with both teams pushing each other to new heights. The journey to this point has been long and winding for both teams.
Alabama's basketball journey began with Bear Bryant, who brought in CM Newton to lead the program. This move resulted in three SEC titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. The Crimson Tide's success continued under Wimp Sanderson, who became the winningest coach in program history and a perennial March Madness contender. The team produced star players like Robert Horry and Latrell Sprewell during this era.
However, Alabama's basketball program faced ups and downs under Mark Gottfried. Despite making the school's first Elite Eight appearance and reaching No. 1 in the polls, the team's performance declined in the late 2000s, leading to Gottfried's resignation. Alabama then struggled to contend, missing the NCAA Tournament for five years before making a splash with former NBA Coach of the Year Avery Johnson. Despite mixed results, Alabama returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
In 2019, Alabama made a bold move by hiring Nate Oats, a young, analytics-focused coach from Buffalo. This decision has paid off, with Alabama making four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Sweet 16 and a historic Final Four berth last year. Oats has also turned the Crimson Tide into a program that develops future NBA players.
Auburn's basketball journey has also seen its share of highs and lows. Former head coach Sonny Smith led the program from 1978 to 1989, making five straight NCAA Tournament appearances and reaching the Elite Eight in 1986. Smith also brought in Charles Barkley, Auburn's most famous alum. Before Smith, Joel Eaves won the SEC Championship in 1960 and is the all-time winningest coach in program history.
However, Auburn faced a dark period between 2003 and 2018, missing the NCAA Tournament for 15 years. Desperate to lift the program, they hired Bruce Pearl, who brought baggage from his previous stint at Tennessee. Despite initial struggles, Pearl's leadership has led to an NCAA Tournament berth in 2018 and a historic Final Four run in 2019. Auburn has since missed just one postseason and is poised to make a fourth-straight trip to the big dance this year.
This matchup between Alabama and Auburn is more than just a big game in the SEC. It showcases how rival programs can push each other to invest and succeed at higher levels by taking risks that pay off. Both teams have evolved significantly over the years, and their commitment to each other has led to this historic moment.
