Alcohol’s Hidden Threat to Brain Cells
Sat Jun 20 2026
Scientists have found that long‑term drinking can cause dangerous build‑ups of a protein linked to Alzheimer’s in lab-grown human brain cells.
Researchers grew neurons from patient‑derived stem cells and also created tiny “brain organoids” that mimic parts of the human cortex.
When these cells were exposed to alcohol over weeks, they began to show high levels of amyloid‑beta, the sticky plaque that damages brain tissue in dementia.
Beyond protein buildup, the alcohol‑treated neurons struggled to mature properly. Their growth patterns slowed and they formed fewer connections than healthy controls.
These changes mirror early signs seen in Alzheimer’s patients, suggesting that drinking might push the brain toward disease before symptoms appear.
Because the study used real human cells, it provides stronger evidence than older animal experiments that alcohol can directly harm brain development.
The findings urge caution for people who drink regularly and highlight the need for more research on how alcohol influences brain aging.
