Amazon Flying Robots Drop Packages Near Chicago

Amazon has started flying delivery drones over some Chicago suburbs. The robots take off from a center in Markham. They carry small boxes that weigh up to five pounds. Each drone can fly as far as eight miles from the base. This is a new way to get orders fast.

Sending a package this way costs Amazon less than five dollars. The company says the service is safe and reliable. A spokesperson claims customers love it. The drones are part of a plan to bring quick delivery to more areas.

Not everyone is happy. Some neighbors complain about the noise. One person in Homewood said the sound is weird and annoying. Another resident named Marty Tully got a delivery already. He likes getting medicine quickly. He also thinks fewer delivery trucks means less traffic on the streets.

Amazon has about twenty-one drones working right now. More centers in the south suburbs might get them soon. People are asking if the noise is worth the speed. Is it okay to fly robots over homes just to save money? What happens if a drone falls or crashes?
