American Express is in trouble. They've agreed to pay a massive $230 million to resolve multiple fraud investigations. This includes $138 million for giving customers bad tax advice about two wire products: Payroll Rewards and Premium Wire. These products were marketed as a way to save on taxes, but that was just a lie. Over 200 employees were fired after an internal investigation, and the products were shut down in 2021.
It gets worse: American Express also agreed to pay $108. 7 million for deceiving small businesses when marketing credit cards. They're accused of using fake tax info, dodgy sales pitches, and even fake ID numbers. The Department of Justice says this kind of behavior hurts the whole financial system. American Express hasn't admitted any wrongdoing, but they've definitely got a big bill to pay.
