America's Empire: Two Sides of Faith

Last week, Chicago faced a harsh cold, both in temperature and fear. People called for mass deportations, separating families, and making the city a key spot for the new president's plan to deport millions. This cold reflects a bigger change in society—some call it oligarchy, others autocracy. So, what's happening? Wes Howard-Brook says our faiths have two sides: one focusing on creation, and the other on empire.
The creation side is about caring for all. It's a commitment to the well-being of everyone and the planet. The empire side, though, benefits a few at the cost of many. We saw this in Chicago last week. For instance, the new health department head wants to cut COVID and polio vaccines. The nominated intelligence chief supports brutal regimes over democratic allies. A formerly undocumented worker is now leading efforts to hurt the poor. Full pardons were given to those who tried to overthrow the government, while minor offenders, often people of color, remain in jail.
These actions represent the empire side of faith. But how should we respond? Howard-Brook says we should focus on creation. Start small, like being kind to everyone. Then expand to your community, building a group that cares for all. Finally, get involved in politics, fighting for the rights of many against the few.
We saw this in Chicago during Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He called America a "sick nation. " And it still is. So, we can't stay silent or isolated. We must stand together, counter the sickness, and bring warmth.
