America's Long-Lost Love Affair with Canada
CanadaSun Mar 30 2025
The idea that the United States might one day annex Canada might seem like a sudden, bizarre notion. However, this idea has been around for a long time, even before the United States became a country. Many familiar names from American history have been involved in these attempts. The approaches have changed over time, but the attempts have always been awkward and unsuccessful.
The first attempt to bring Canada into the United States happened in 1774. The First Continental Congress sent a letter to Quebec, which was then used to refer to all of Canada. The letter talked about the rights of free people and suggested that Canadians should join the Americans in Philadelphia for a meeting. The letter also hinted that Canada should consider the rest of North America as friends, not enemies.
When no Canadians showed up in Philadelphia, the Congress sent another letter. This time, it was written by John Jay and talked about how British rule was bad for Canadians. The letter ended with a threat, saying that the Americans hoped Canadians would not force them to treat them as enemies.
In 1775, things got more serious. The Congress decided to invade Canada. George Washington sent a message to the Canadians, saying that Benedict Arnold was on his way with troops. He urged the Canadians to join the Americans in a "union" and run together to the same goal.
So, why is this history important? Well, it shows that the idea of annexing Canada is not new. It also shows that these attempts have always been awkward and unsuccessful. As some people in the United States talk about expanding northward, it's worth remembering these past failures. It's also worth considering whether annexing Canada is a good idea in the first place.
Canada is a sovereign nation with its own history, culture, and values. It has its own set of problems and challenges. Annexing Canada would not solve any of the United States' problems. In fact, it would likely create more problems. It's important to respect Canada's sovereignty and focus on building a positive relationship between the two countries. This relationship should be based on mutual respect, cooperation, and friendship, not on attempts to absorb one country into the other.
