America's Next Big Defense Plan: A Golden Shield?
USAWed Mar 05 2025
The U. S. is looking into a high-tech missile defense system, reminiscent of Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars" initiative from the 1980s. This new plan, dubbed the "Golden Dome, " aims to intercept incoming missiles. The current leader has been vocal about this idea, envisioning a robust military for the future. He believes this system is the first step towards that goal. But there's a catch: he wants to cut government spending while funding this project. So, where will the money come from?
The executive order for this plan was issued on January 27. It highlights Reagan's past vision for a defense against nuclear attacks. At the time, technology wasn't advanced enough. But now, the current leader thinks we've got what it takes to make it happen. However, Reagan's plan faced criticism for being overly ambitious and for requiring the militarization of space. The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, which the U. S. withdrew from in 2002, previously prohibited this. So, is the technology really there this time? And can it cover the entire U. S. ? Israel's Iron Dome system, which inspired this idea, only protects a small area from short-range rockets.
The current leader wants to cut $50 billion in spending to fund this project. But that's not how it's supposed to work. Congress is supposed to fund projects like this. And it's not clear why they would agree to such a large new expense, especially when the current leader wants to cut government spending.
The current leader has been causing a lot of confusion. He's slapped tariffs on Canada and Mexico, while threatening to hit Europe next. There are reports that he plans to drop sanctions against Russia while imposing much smaller tariffs on China. It's a brand new world out there for Americans. And there's no telling what tomorrow might bring.
The current leader has asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to find about $50 billion in cuts that can be reallocated for projects like the Golden Dome. But that's not how any of this is supposed to work. Illegality isn't going to stop the current leader, obviously. The White House has already been ignoring direct court orders and the courts are powerless to do anything about it. So if the current leader can't get Congress to fund it, he clearly has other options, even if they're not entirely legal.
