Discovering that a story from 800 years ago is actually true! This is what a team of archaeologists in Norway found out. They matched the DNA of a man thrown into a well during a raid in 1197 to the description in an old text called the Sverris Saga. This man, who was around 40 when he died, had blue eyes, fair skin, and blond or light-brown hair. He came from a region in southern Norway known for inbreeding. The team used modern science like DNA testing and radiocarbon dating to figure this out. Isn't it amazing how old stories can be proven true with today's technology?
The man was found in a well at Sverresborg Castle in 1938, but it took until recently to confirm his identity. The team even figured out that his ancestors were from the modern-day county of Vest-Agder in southern Norway. This shows that the unique genetics of southern Norwegians were already present 800 years ago. The raid mentioned in the saga happened in 1197, and the man's bones fit well within that time frame.
The scientists are now looking into other historic figures, like Saint Olaf, who is supposed to be buried in Trondheim Cathedral. Finding him could give more insights into Norway's genetic history.
