Ancient Shrimp-like Creature Found in Fool's Gold

Finding a shimmering fossil that looks like a piece of expensive jewelry. Well, that's exactly what scientists discovered in New York state. This fossil is a new type of ancient arthropod, similar to modern-day shrimp. It lived on the ocean floor around 450 million years ago. The unique thing about this fossil is that it's preserved in pyrite, also known as fool's gold. This makes it stand out because pyrite preservation is quite rare. The creature, named Lomankus edgecombei, is part of a group called megacheira, which are now extinct.Experts used CT scans to reveal detailed features of the creature's body, including its sensory structures. These structures are typically lost over time, but the pyrite preserved them perfectly. The fossil was found in a place called Beecher’s Bed, known for its rich fossil deposits. Scientists think this creature used its head appendages to sense its environment, as it had no eyes. This new discovery gives us a glimpse into how early arthropods evolved and adapted.
