Angelina Jolie Steps into Ukraine's War Zone
Angelina Jolie, the renowned actor, recently traveled to Kherson, a Ukrainian city under constant attack. She also visited the nearby area of Mykolaiv. During her visit, Jolie met with medical workers, volunteers, and local residents who live under the threat of Russian bombings.
She shared her thoughts through a statement from the Legacy of War Foundation, praising the courage and unity of the people in these regions.
A Glimpse of the Visit
Photos from her visit show Jolie in a protective vest, standing in a basement and talking to children in a room without windows. She also toured medical and educational facilities that have been moved underground to stay safe from the attacks.
Kherson: A City Under Siege
Kherson, once home to nearly 300,000 people, is now one of the most dangerous places in Ukraine. Russian forces occupied it for eight months before withdrawing to the other side of the Dnipro River.
United Nations Investigation
A United Nations investigation recently reported that Russia has been using drones to target civilians near the front lines. This has forced thousands of people to flee, which the U.N. considers a crime against humanity. Russia denies these accusations.
Local officials say that Ukraine's military shot down around 2,500 of the 2,646 drones that Russia launched at Kherson last week.
A Message of Support
Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, a deputy head of Kherson's regional administration, expressed gratitude for Jolie's visit. He said it shows that the world has not forgotten about them, which is important because sometimes it feels that way.
This was not Jolie's first trip to Ukraine. She also visited Lviv, a city in western Ukraine, in the spring of 2022 to meet people affected by the war.
