Another Rabid Bat Found in Cole County

Cole County health officials announced that a second bat was found to be rabid. The first case happened on September 17 when a bat bit a stray cat. Officials said the new finding came after testing more samples from local wildlife.

A household pet that may have touched the infected bat was checked and shown to have a current rabies shot plus a booster. No people were known to have been exposed.

Rabies spreads when an infected animal bites or scratches another creature. If a dog or cat gets bitten, the wound should be washed right away and a doctor should be called. Early treatment can stop the virus from causing serious illness.

The health department urges anyone who thinks they might have been in contact with a rabid animal to see a medical professional quickly. Vets can give a booster shot if needed, and pet owners should keep their animals up to date on vaccinations. Staying alert and acting fast helps protect both people and pets.
