Apology Over Racist Radio Rant Sparks City Debate
New York City, USAThu Mar 05 2026
Sid Rosenberg, a well‑known right‑wing host, faced public fury after he called Mayor Mamdani a “cockroach” on his show. The insult was part of a longer tweet that also labeled the mayor an “America‑hating, Jew‑hating, Radical Islam cockroach” and a “jihadist. ” After the backlash, Rosenberg issued an on‑air apology, saying he was sorry for the name‑calling and that he could have avoided it. He also criticized Democrats for using harsher slurs, though he did not address the “jihadist” claim.
The police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, was among those who called Rosenberg out. She publicly condemned the remarks and sent him a private text, which he later revealed on his program. Tisch emphasized that dehumanizing language is unacceptable and that she does not share such views. Her message was echoed by former NYPD Chief John Chell, who also spoke out against the comments.
Rosenberg described Tisch as a “very good friend” and said their conversation was constructive. However, the incident highlighted existing tensions between the mayor’s office and the police department over public safety policies. The commissioner had previously met with Rosenberg in January when he also labeled the mayor a “terrorist. ”
Mayor Mamdani responded by condemning Rosenberg’s remarks as bigotry and dehumanization. He noted that being called an animal or insect is painful for him as a Muslim New Yorker and someone born in East Africa. The mayor’s statement aimed to counter the hateful narrative and defend his dignity.
This episode shows how public figures’ words can quickly spark controversy, prompting officials to speak out against hate speech. It also reminds listeners that insults based on race, religion or nationality can have lasting harm and should be challenged.
