Did you know that Apple wasn’t just creating phones and computers? They were also dabbling in the world of electric vehicles (EVs). For years, rumors swirled about Apple’s secret car project. But instead of teaming up with big names like Volkswagen or McLaren, Apple worked with a surprising partner: Chinese EV maker BYD.
This collaboration started back in 2017. Together, they aimed to create super-long-range and extra-safe batteries for electric cars. Apple brought its expertise in battery packs and heat management, while BYD shared its knowledge of lithium iron phosphate cells, often called LFP.
The result? A special kind of battery system that BYD now uses in all its electric cars. It’s called the Blade battery, and it’s known for how it arranges the cells. This layout is similar to how Apple stacks cells in its laptops.
But even with this cool tech, Apple decided to step back from its car project after more than 10 years. They spent a lot of money trying to make it happen, but in the end, they cancelled it.
