Apple's Global Production Plans Under Fire
USA, BerkeleyThu May 15 2025
Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, recently announced that the company would start importing iPhones made in India to satisfy most of the demand in the United States. This decision did not sit well with U. S. President Donald Trump. He expressed his displeasure during a business gathering in Doha. Trump mentioned a conversation he had with Cook, urging him to halt iPhone production in India and instead boost manufacturing in the United States.
Trump has been known for his tough stance on tariffs with many countries. He mentioned that Apple could still build in India if they wanted to support the country. However, he emphasized that India has some of the highest tariffs in the world. Trump also hinted that Apple would be increasing production in the U. S. , although he did not provide any details or a timeline for this shift.
Apple had previously announced plans to invest $500 billion over the next four years to expand manufacturing in the U. S. This includes setting up new facilities, opening units, hiring over 20, 000 people, and establishing a manufacturing academy. Trump's comments came just a day after India approved a $435 million project by Foxconn to manufacture Apple chips in the country. Foxconn has big plans to increase production in India and create alternative manufacturing units to reduce reliance on China.
Apple's move to India is part of a broader strategy to diversify its supply chain. Reports indicate that Apple already produces 20% of its iPhones in India. Additionally, the Financial Times reported that Apple aims to import all iPhones sold in the U. S. from India by 2026. This shift could have significant implications for both the U. S. and Indian economies, as well as for Apple's global supply chain. It raises questions about the impact of tariffs and trade policies on multinational corporations. How will these changes affect jobs, innovation, and economic growth in both countries? Only time will tell how this situation unfolds.
