Apple's Next Budget iPhone: What to Expect and Why It Matters
KoreaTue Jul 08 2025
Apple is gearing up to release the iPhone 17e next spring, according to reports from a Korean tech outlet. This new model is expected to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, the iPhone 16e, by using the same OLED display technology. This decision seems to be a cost-saving move, as it allows Apple to rely on established production lines.
The iPhone 16e, which hit the market in February, started at $599 and featured a 6. 1-inch OLED display, Face ID, an A18 chip, and a USB-C port. It was designed to be a more affordable option within the iPhone 16 lineup. For the iPhone 17e, suppliers like BOE and Samsung are likely to continue providing the display panels, with LG Display possibly joining in.
Rumors have been circulating since April about the iPhone 17e entering trial production, with an expected release in May. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also weighed in, predicting that Apple will launch a second-generation iPhone 17e in the first half of next year.
Looking ahead, Kuo suggests that Apple has plans for a third-generation "e" device, set to launch alongside the standard iPhone 18 in the first half of 2027. This unusual timing is part of Apple's new strategy to split its iPhone releases into two separate launch windows. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are expected to debut in the spring, about six months after the iPhone 18 Pro models.
This shift in strategy raises questions about how Apple plans to balance innovation with cost-efficiency. By reusing components and adjusting its release schedule, Apple seems to be focusing on making its products more accessible without compromising on quality.
