Arrow and the DC TV World: A New Free Streaming Era
Wed Apr 15 2026
DC comics moved from page to screen over the last twenty years, turning comic books into movies and TV shows. In the early 2000s, superhero films were just starting to catch on, and TV networks began testing comic‑book shows. By the 2010s, The CW became the main hub for superhero fans, launching a series of shows that would later form a shared universe.
Now Pluto TV will add one of the most famous DC series to its free lineup on May 1, 2026. The show is called Arrow and stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow who first appeared on television in 2012. The story follows a darker version of the archery hero after he returns home five years after surviving a shipwreck.
Arrow’s second season opened the door for other heroes. It introduced The Flash, which brought Grant Gustin into the mix. From that point on, each new season saw a fresh superhero join the world: Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman, and Supergirl. The network kept adding shows until 2024 when the last Arrowverse series, Superman & Lois, finished its run.
The show was produced by Greg Berlanti, a major TV creator. Arrow ran for eight seasons on The CW from 2012 to 2020, producing 170 episodes. It was the second longest‑running series in the shared universe after The Flash, which had 184 episodes. The CW’s longest‑running superhero show is actually Smallville, a pre‑Arrow series that helped pave the way for later shows. Stephen Amell was the second actor to play Green Arrow on TV, after Justin Hartley in Smallville.
If Arrow hadn’t succeeded, the whole shared universe would likely never have happened. The series sparked annual cross‑over events, like Crisis on Infinite Earths, until the pandemic halted production in 2020. In that event, Oliver Queen died after a huge sacrifice that reshaped the multiverse.
After Arrow ended, Amell returned once more in The Flash season nine as a Spectre‑like figure who helped the hero deal with old trauma. He is now set to star in Fox’s new Baywatch reboot, which began filming earlier this year.
