In the world of medicine, blurry X-ray images can lead to misdiagnoses. One way to fix this is by using a method called Virtual Grid (VG), which helps to reduce the blur caused by scattered X-rays. Researchers created a system to evaluate the quality of bedside chest X-rays using VG. They started by training an image quality evaluator called BRISQUE using 200 chest X-ray images. The results were promising; BRISQUE's scores matched well with what experts thought.
To test further, they checked how 14 radiological technologists rated 100 real chest X-rays. They compared these ratings with BRISQUE's scores. The agreement was high, meaning BRISQUE could accurately judge image quality without needing a perfect reference image. Plus, it only needs a small amount of training data, making it easier for different hospitals to use.
