In Australia, a massive saltwater crocodile named Cassius has passed away. He was over 110 years old and held the Guinness World Record for being the largest crocodile in captivity. Cassius was nearly 18 feet long and weighed more than a ton. Cassius had been living at Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island near Cairns, Queensland, since 1987. He was brought from the Northern Territory, where crocodiles are a significant part of the tourism industry.
The wildlife sanctuary announced his death on Facebook, noting that Cassius had been in poor health since mid-October. They shared that he was believed to have lived beyond the typical lifespan of a wild crocodile. Before Cassius, the record for the largest crocodile in captivity was held by Lolong from the Philippines, who measured 20 feet 3 inches long. Lolong died in 2013. The sanctuary expressed their deep sorrow over Cassius's passing, stating that he will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in their hearts.
