Austria's Alps have recently seen a tragic series of events. Five skiers have lost their lives in two separate avalanches. This happened after a lot of snow fell in the area. The first incident occurred in the Pongau region near Salzburg. Seven skiers were caught in an avalanche. Four of them died, and one was badly hurt. Just a little while before, another skier was swept away by a similar avalanche. The mountain rescue team was called around 2 p. m. local time. They found four people dead and one seriously injured.
The conditions in the Alps have been really bad lately. This has led to several deaths over the past week. Gerhard Kremser, the head of the Pongau mountain rescue service, expressed his deepest sympathies to the families. He also warned about the seriousness of the current avalanche situation. Earlier in the week, a 13-year-old Czech boy died in an avalanche in Bad Gastein. On Sunday, a 58-year-old skier lost his life in Weerberg. In Switzerland, a German man was killed, and four others were injured while cross-country skiing. In France, six skiers died in avalanches at various resorts last weekend.
