LanzaJet, a company based in Illinois, is on a mission to make air travel cleaner. They're building a special plant in Georgia called Freedom Pines Fuels. This plant is designed to make jet fuel that's better for the environment. It's not made from oil like regular jet fuel. Instead, it's made from ethanol, which can come from things like sugarcane or corn. The company had some big plans. They wanted to use sugarcane from Brazil to make their fuel. But then, a new law in the U. S. changed everything. Now, they have to use corn from the Midwest instead. This change isn't great for the environment. Corn doesn't reduce carbon emissions as much as sugarcane does. The plant was supposed to be finished last year, but it's running behind schedule. First, a hurricane and some equipment problems caused delays. Then, the change in U. S. energy policy added more challenges. Despite all these setbacks, the company is still hopeful. They believe they can start producing fuel soon.
LanzaJet has some big supporters. Airlines like British Airways and Southwest, as well as companies like Microsoft, are backing them. These companies want to reduce their carbon footprint and are willing to pay more for greener fuel. The demand for this cleaner jet fuel, called SAF, is growing. The UN wants the aviation industry to be carbon neutral by 2050. Many countries are starting to require airlines to use SAF. Even companies like Microsoft are buying SAF Certificates to support its use. However, SAF is still very expensive. It costs two to five times more than regular jet fuel. The U. S. government was offering big tax credits to help make SAF more affordable. But a new law has cut these credits and made it harder for LanzaJet to qualify. LanzaJet isn't giving up. They're planning to build more plants around the world. They're also looking into using agricultural waste, like corn stalks, to make their fuel. This could be even better for the environment. But for now, they're focusing on getting their Georgia plant up and running.
