Nestlé has taken a big step by recalling some of its baby formula products. They think these products might have a toxin that could make babies sick. The recall is for specific batches of SMA infant formula and follow-on formula.
The toxin in question is called cereulide. It can cause vomiting and stomach cramps. Even though no one has gotten sick yet, Nestlé wants to be extra careful. They said the safety of babies is their top priority.
This recall is happening all over the world. The affected products were sold in countries like France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy, and Sweden. In different places, these products go by different names. For example, in France, they are sold as Guigoz and Nidal. In Germany, they are known as Beba and Alfamino.
Parents can check if their baby formula is part of the recall by looking at the batch numbers. These can usually be found on the bottom of the container for powdered formula or on the side or top of the package for ready-to-feed formula.
Cereulide is made by certain bacteria. The important thing to know is that boiling water or cooking won't get rid of this toxin. So, preparing the formula normally won't make it safe.
The U. K. 's Food Standards Agency (FSA) is also taking this seriously. They are working to make sure all affected products are taken off the shelves. If you have used the recalled formula and are worried, you should talk to your doctor. In the U. K. , you can also call NHS 111 for advice.
Nestlé said the problem is with an ingredient from one of their suppliers. They are offering refunds to anyone who bought the affected formula.
