Chronic low back pain (LBP) is a common issue that affects many people. A recent study looked into different ways to help manage this pain. The study involved 64 participants, both men and women, with an average age of 41. 9 years. They were split into three groups to test different treatments: Kinesio taping (KT) with tension, KT without tension (placebo), and post-isometric muscle relaxation (PIR). The researchers used various tools to measure the effects of these treatments. They used a numerical rating scale to check pain levels at rest, the Oswestry Disability Index to see how much the pain affected daily activities, and a special device called MyotonPRO© to measure muscle tension, stiffness, and relaxation in the lower back.
The study found that all three treatments helped reduce pain and disability. However, the KT group showed some interesting results. After the treatment and a week later, the side of the back opposite to where the tape was applied showed increased muscle tension and stiffness, and decreased relaxation. This was only on the side opposite to where the tape was applied. The study concluded that KT, whether with or without tension, and PIR all helped reduce pain and disability. However, the changes in muscle properties did not seem to be directly related to the pain reduction. This suggests that these treatments mainly work by reducing pain, rather than changing how the muscles work. It's important to note that chronic low back pain is a complex issue. While these treatments can help, they should be part of a broader approach to managing the pain. This could include exercise, physical therapy, and other pain management strategies. The study highlights the need for more research to fully understand how these treatments work and how they can be best used to help people with chronic low back pain.
