BAFTA Snubs: A Closer Look
London, UKWed Jan 15 2025
The BAFTA Film nominees for 2025 were recently announced, and some big names and popular movies didn't make the cut. Films like "Queer" and "Challengers, " directed by Luca Guadagnino, were snubbed despite Golden Globe nominations. Even the highly anticipated musical "Wicked" missed out on key categories.
Nicole Kidman, who won a best actress award at Venice and was Golden Globe-nominated, couldn't charm the BAFTA voters with her performance in "Babygirl. " The third installment of the Paddington series, "Paddington in Peru, " also failed to secure a nomination, despite its box office success.
One notable absence is Denzel Washington, who has never been nominated for a BAFTA. Despite being a favorite for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, BAFTA has continuously overlooked his performances.
Fernanda Torres, a Golden Globe winner for her role in "I’m Still Here, " also missed out on BAFTA recognition. Other well-reviewed films like "Nickel Boys" and performances by Margaret Qualley and Michele Austin were overlooked.
Surprisingly, animated films "Moana 2" and "Memoir Of A Snail" didn't make it into their respective categories. Angelina Jolie's performance in "Maria Callas" also failed to impress BAFTA voters.
On a positive note, the British-Irish indie film "Kneecap" received six nominations. Hugh Grant and Marianne Jean-Baptiste also received nods, with Grant marking his fourth nomination and Jean-Baptiste her first since 1997. Saoirse Ronan achieved her seventh nomination at just 30 years old, a remarkable feat.
"The Substance" and "Nosferatu" had unexpected success with five nominations each, despite being shut out at the Golden Globes. Sundance favorite "Daughters" continues to gain momentum in the documentary category.
