Basin Village Wins Final Payment Over Toxic Chemicals

Lake in the Hills, IL, USATue Jun 23 2026
The village council quickly approved a payment from a chemical maker without debate. The deal brings about $17, 000 to the town, but after paying the company’s lawyers and other fees, the community will receive roughly $13, 000. Officials expect most of the money to come from this source. This is the fourth settlement involving “forever chemicals” that have been linked to health problems. The last case ended the village’s participation in a broader lawsuit about these substances. Similar agreements were already signed with two other firms, and the village has been planning to fix its water supply for years. The chemicals in question are used in items like waterproof boots and firefighting foam. They do not break down easily, so they linger in the environment. Studies have shown a higher chance of cancers and developmental issues for children exposed to them.
Because of the contamination, one of the village’s wells was shut down in 2021. The council has set aside $1. 9 million to clean up the water, hoping to finish this year. The money from these settlements will help cover those costs. In earlier agreements, the town received about $33, 900 from one company and roughly $34, 400 from another after costs. The first settlement from a different maker brought in nearly $387, 300 before fees. That payment will continue to come in small amounts until 2033. The village’s administrator said that more funds are expected from the remaining smaller deals, and a payment plan is in place with one of the companies. The final settlement marks the end of legal actions over these chemicals for the community.
