BBC Studios is mulling over wrapping up its content production in India. The reason? A shift in India's TV and streaming landscape, which includes shrinking budgets from broadcasters and streaming platforms. While no final call has been made, the BBC is reviewing its Indian production model to make sure it's efficient and effective.
India has been a big part of BBC Studios' game plan. They've created local versions of popular shows like The Office and Criminal Justice, and produced hits like Out of Love and sports docu-series Sons of the Soil. BBC Studios also has deals with ITV Studios and All3Media for content distribution.
Right now, the TV scene in India is tough. Just last month, Sameer Gogate stepped down as the boss of Indian productions at BBC Studios. For now, Deepa Nair and Sachin Mahajan are filling in.
India isn't just about entertainment for the BBC. They also run TV and digital news platforms, and BBC Earth with Sony Pictures Networks India. In 2023, the BBC's offices were raided by tax authorities, which followed a controversial documentary on India's President.
