Bedaquiline Delivers Strong Results in Drug-Resistant TB Treatment

A research team studied how well bedaquiline works against tough TB cases. They looked at 64 patients who visited a hospital in Dahod between April 2024 and September 2025. All of them had drug-resistant tuberculosis and were taking a treatment plan that included bedaquiline. The doctors checked their progress every month to see if the medicine worked and how they felt.

Most of the patients saw their sputum clear up - 61 out of 64, which is nearly 96 percent. That's really good news. The test results showed that almost all the bacteria were killed by other medicines in the mix. Some strains were resistant to rifampicin, but most were sensitive to other drugs like moxifloxacin. The researchers noted that these lab results alone don't prove bedaquiline is better than other treatments.

Side effects happened to some people. Nausea hit about 20 percent of patients, and electrolyte issues affected around 23 percent. Kidney function stayed mostly okay, though there were small changes. Because the study didn't compare bedaquiline directly to another drug, we can't say for sure how much credit goes to this medicine. Still, the high success rate suggests it could be a valuable tool for hard-to-treat TB cases.
