Behind the Laughter: The Real Struggles of SNL Cast Members
The world of Saturday Night Live, often seen as a dream job for comedians, has its share of hidden challenges. Ego Nwodim and Heidi Gardner, both former cast members, recently shared their experiences on Nwodim's podcast, Thanks Dad. They talked about the intense environment of SNL, which can be tough even for experienced performers.
The Intense Environment
Working on SNL means spending a lot of time together. This can bring people closer, but it can also create tension. Nwodim mentioned that sharing a dressing room and rehearsing together for long hours can lead to mixed feelings. Despite this, she was glad that she and Gardner became close friends.
Friendship and Support
Gardner agreed, saying that their friendship was built on hard work and mutual respect. She acknowledged that everyone has egos and wants to succeed, but they managed to support each other without letting competition get in the way.
The Competitive Nature
Nwodim also revealed that the competitive nature of the show can make it difficult to feel like everyone is winning together. She praised Gardner for leaving the show with grace and positivity, saying that it's a sign of true success.
Post-SNL Journeys
Both Nwodim and Gardner left SNL before the 51st season started. Gardner's departure was announced in late August, while Nwodim's was announced in mid-September. Since leaving, Gardner has landed new projects, and Nwodim has been busy with film, television, and even a fashion show.
Cast Changes
Their exits were part of a bigger cast change after SNL's 50th season. Several other cast members and writers also did not return for the new season. New faces have joined the cast, including Ben Marshall, who was part of the comedy trio Please Don't Destroy.
