Belarus Leader Visits Kyiv Amid Rising Tensions
Kyiv, UkraineMon May 25 2026
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, a former opposition figure from Belarus, arrived in Kyiv after weeks of growing concern that Russia could pull Minsk deeper into its conflict with Ukraine. Her visit followed a major strike on the capital that killed four people and damaged historic buildings, heightening fears of further attacks. The Belarusian leader believes that a democratic government in Minsk could bring stability to the region.
During her stay, Tsikhanouskaya met with Ukraine’s foreign minister and spoke about the changing rhetoric of President Alexander Lukashenko. She warned that his statements suggest a readiness for war, which worries ordinary citizens. This meeting marked what she called her first official trip to Kyiv.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has recently cautioned that Belarus might become more involved in Russia’s war. He announced plans to strengthen northern defenses against any new offensive that could come from Belarusian territory. In contrast, Lukashenko dismissed the idea of Minsk joining the conflict but said it would defend itself if attacked.
Belarus has supported Russia throughout the war, hosting Russian missile systems and participating in nuclear drills with Moscow. Tsikhanouskaya highlighted a recent phone call between French President Emmanuel Macron and Lukashenko, interpreting it as a warning from Europe. She emphasized that any escalation would trigger a response.
The Belarusian president is also seeking to ease Western sanctions imposed after his crackdown on protesters in 2020. These measures were tightened following his support for Russia’s military actions. Ukraine has pledged to respond in kind if Belarus provokes further tensions.
