Belinda's Big Break: A New Chapter
ThailandMon Apr 07 2025
The final episode of the third season of The White Lotus had a big reveal. The creator, Mike White, had a clear vision from the start. He wanted Belinda, played by Natasha Rothwell, to end up with money and leave someone behind, just like what happened to her in the first season.
Rothwell's character, Belinda, had a tough journey. She went from being a hardworking employee to becoming someone who could finally enjoy life's luxuries. In the end, she took $5 million from Greg, who was Tanya's ex-husband. This money was for her silence about Tanya's suspicious death. Tanya was a wealthy guest who had a friendship with Belinda in the first season. They even planned to start a business together, but Tanya disappeared.
Belinda's final act in the third season was to leave her lover, Pornchai, just like Tanya left her. She decided to go on a jetboat with her son, Zion, and the $5 million. This left Pornchai behind, just like Tanya left Belinda in the first season. Rothwell described this moment as heartbreaking, but she also saw it as a chance for Belinda to finally enjoy some freedom.
Rothwell believes that Belinda is not just like Tanya or Greg. She thinks Belinda has more grief and is more heartbroken than Tanya was. She also thinks that Belinda might go back to Pornchai in the future. Rothwell related to Belinda's struggle with money, as she herself had experienced financial difficulties early in her acting career.
The creator, Mike White, had to deal with criticism about Belinda's ending in the first season. Some people thought it was too sad and depressing. So, he wanted to give Belinda a happier ending in the third season. He saw Belinda's choice to take the money and leave as a very human and honest decision. He also imagined that Belinda might go on to do something meaningful with her life.
Rothwell and White worked together to make Belinda's story authentic. Rothwell contributed scenes that showed Belinda's perspective as a Black woman. She also pitched a scene where Belinda interacts with another Black couple at the White Lotus, showing her desire to make them feel seen and acknowledged.
The ending of the third season also leaves room for Belinda and Greg to return in the fourth season. Rothwell and Greg, played by Jon Gries, both expressed their interest in coming back. They also acknowledged that Mike White's storytelling is full of surprises, so anything is possible.
Belinda's journey in The White Lotus is one of struggle and triumph. She went from being a hardworking employee to becoming someone who could finally enjoy life's luxuries. Her story is a reminder that sometimes, people have to make tough decisions to get ahead in life. It also shows that even in the face of adversity, there is always a chance for a new beginning.
