Biden and Zuckerberg Clash Over Meta's End to Fact-Checking
USASun Jan 12 2025
President Joe Biden slammed Meta's decision to fire its U. S. fact-checkers on Friday, shortly after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg accused the Biden administration of pressuring the social media giant to remove certain content. Earlier in the week, Zuckerberg announced that Meta would replace its fact-checking system with a community-driven approach called "Community Notes. " Biden criticized the move, stating that truth is crucial and that allowing false information to spread is harmful. He also questioned the influence of billionaires on media policies.
Zuckerberg, however, argued that the Biden administration had been too aggressive in demanding content changes. He claimed that Biden's team had tried to force Meta to censor anti-vaccine views. Zuckerberg compared the situation to George Orwell's "1984" and admitted that he had initially relied too much on media critiques after Trump's election. Despite the timing, Zuckerberg insisted that his decision to end fact-checking was not a reaction to Trump's recent election but a long-standing concern.
