On Friday, in Berlin, President Joe Biden sat down with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The main topic on the agenda? Supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. They also chatted about calming things down in the Middle East and standing against hate, like antisemitism.
Biden urged both countries to keep their support strong for Ukraine, even though it's tough. He believes that the cost of letting aggression win is much higher. Scholz agreed, saying Germany and the U. S. work closely together on this.
In a special ceremony, Steinmeier gave Biden Germany's highest award, the "Order of Merit. " Biden thanked him, saying it shows how far the two nations have come and how strong their alliance is. He also reminded everyone that democracy and alliances are super important.
The meeting comes at a time when Europe is wondering if U. S. support for Ukraine will change if Donald Trump wins the upcoming election. The White House said Biden stressed that the U. S. and Germany will keep working closely together, no matter what challenges come up.
Biden also praised Scholz for leading Germany to invest more in NATO's defense and helping to free wrongfully detained Americans from Russian prisons earlier this year.
