Big Changes Ahead for Weather Satellites and Space Programs
Colorado, Denver, USASat Apr 12 2025
The White House has sent a budget draft to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The draft is for the fiscal year 2026. It suggests big changes to space-related activities. This includes the Geostationary Extended Observations program. This program is set to launch a new generation of weather satellites in the early 2030s. The budget draft wants to remove some instruments. These instruments focus on climate data, like atmospheric composition and ocean color. The goal is to cut costs. The program is estimated to cost nearly $20 billion over 30 years. This includes six satellites, their instruments, and operations.
The budget draft also proposes to end the cooperation between NASA and NOAA on the GeoXO program. NASA usually handles the technical side of satellite development. It is unclear how this change will affect the program. NOAA does not have much expertise in satellite development.
Another big change is moving the Space Weather Prediction Center. This center monitors space weather and issues warnings about solar storms. It is unclear how this move will affect NOAA's spacecraft and instruments. These provide important space weather data.
The budget draft also wants to transfer the space traffic coordination system. This system is called the Traffic Coordination System for Space. It is being developed by the Office of Space Commerce within NOAA. The system is set to be fully operational by next January. The transfer would be to a non-government entity, like a company or nonprofit. This change would not save much money. The office requested $75. 6 million for the fiscal year 2025. Most of this would be spent on the space traffic system.
Many scientists and members of Congress are worried about these changes. They are part of broader changes proposed for NOAA. These changes focus on climate programs. Some politicians have spoken out against the budget draft. They say it is both outrageous and dangerous. They plan to work to block these changes.
The budget draft is a chance for NOAA to make final changes before it is officially released. It is important for NOAA to carefully consider these changes. They could have big impacts on weather forecasting and space programs. It is also important for the public to be aware of these changes. They could affect many aspects of life, from weather forecasting to space exploration.

questions
How will the lack of internal NOAA expertise in satellite development affect the success of the GeoXO program if NASA's role is terminated?
If NOAA can't predict the weather, will they at least be able to predict when it's a good day for a picnic?
If the GeoXO program loses its climate-focused instruments, will we still be able to predict when it's too hot to wear socks?
